1. How do I attached the cable to the cable fittings?

The L.J. Smith cable fittings are "swageless", nothing is crimped or attached to the end of the cable. No expensive "swaging" equipment is required. Simply insert the cable into the cable fitting, always rotate the cable in a direction that is with the lay of the cable strands.


2. Can the cable be used outdoors?

Yes, the cable is made of 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel, therefore it can be used in a exterior application.


3. Can the cable fittings be used outdoors?

Yes, the cable fittings are made of 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel so they can also be used for exterior application.


4. What is the cable construction?

The cable is 1/8" Marine Grade Stainless Steel with a 1x19 construction (1 strand wrapped by 19)


5. What lengths is the cable sold in?

50', 150' and 500' rolls.


6. What tool do I use if a second attempt is needed to insert the cable into the cable fitting?

Use the cable release tool (#C-RELEASE)


7. What do you recommend to cut the cable?

Our cable cutter (#C-CUTTER)


8. Will the cable need to be cleaned?

Yes, occasionally the cable will require cleaning & maintenance. Use our Stainless Steel Cleaner & Protectant (#C-CLEANER) or any stainless steel cleaner.


9. Will the cables need to be retightened after the installation?

Yes, slight tightening will be needed, probably twice a year using two 3/8" open end wrenches.


10. What handrail is recommended for use with the Linear cable, tube, and panel systems?

Our 684 handrail is recommended, however other rail profiles can also be used.


11. What lengths of the 684 handrail are available?

8', 10'. 12', 14', 16' and longer lengths can be custom quoted; please contact our customer service dept.


12. Is the 684 handrail available in bending rail?

Yes, 684 bending rail can be made; please contact our customer service dept.


13. Is the 684 handrail available in plowed rail?

Yes, the 684 rail can be made with a custom plow; please contact our customer service dept.


14. How is the handrail attached to the Linear wood newel?

Each Linear newel comes with 3/4" x 2" wood dowel for attaching the 684 handrail.


15. What is the maximum distance between the Wood & Metal newels with cable infill?

42" for the rake and level. We recommend that you always check with your building inspector.


16. Will the premade handrail fittings work with any rise x run?

No, they only work with a 7 1/2" rise and 10" run or 36.9 degree stairway ascent.


17. How are the Box Treads constructed?

The Box Treads are made of 3 solid pieces of material that are edge-glued with eased edges. They are Solid (not hollow).


18. Is there an alternative to the box treads if they are not appropriate?

The Squared Nosed Treads (LJ-8870) are a great option, they can be purchased Plain, MR1 (miter 1 end) or MR2 (miter both ends). Coordinating False Tread Kits (LJ-8879), Landing Tread (LJ-8890-5) and Cove/Shoe/Trim Moulding (LJ-8895) are also available.


19. Is a top "stabilizing member" needed?

For the wood newels we strongly recommend a stabilizing member (3/4" tube or a S4S wood piece are acceptable options) between newels.


20. Who do I consult to ensure that what I want to build meets my municipality's code?

Consult your local building code official before purchasing and installing the system.
