Customer Service

1. Can I buy direct from L.J. Smith?

L.J. Smith markets through wholesale distributors, retailers, dealers and lumberyards. Please contact our customer service specialists for a list of companies in your area who sell L.J. Smith products.

2. Is the strength of the stair determined by the size of newels and balusters?

No, it depends on the installation. The installation of the newels is the strength of the system.

3. Can L.J. Smith make stair parts in Pine?

Yes, we offer Southern yellow pine, Douglas fir, and Eastern white pine. However, some laminated items may not be available due to the moisture content of pine which will result in bowing and cracking. Please provide a list of items and quantities for quote.

4. Have L.J. Smith's primed wood and powder-coated iron balusters been tested for lead content?

The materials employed in the coating of our imported primed wooden balusters and imported powder-coated iron have been independently tested by qualified laboratories and have been found not to exceed limits for the lead as specified by the Consumer Products Safety Commission of the United States of America.

5. Why does your cherry have color variations?

Since the introduction of our cherry product offering in 1990, we have been manufacturing from natural cherry raw materials. Natural means that the material consists of both heartwood and sapwood. And, although we make every effort to color match the wood during manufacturing, we cannot guarantee that the products will be perfectly color matched. Even if we were to use all heartwood (or all sapwood), there would still be variances in color because there are many shades of red within heartwood and many shades of cream within sapwood
